  • The newsletter and its disappearance

    Paul Carroll by Paul Carroll
Well, it never showed up in August, and here's why!

Basically, Yahoo! is terrible for it. We cannot send it to everyone at once.

Also, we are currently looking at ways to improve our communication with the public. We're looking at doing a magazine (free, online format) that will be amazing (I haven't seen any work done yet, so I'm not boasting)

Need more info? Log onto our forum : http://www.literaryden.proboards106....

Sorry, but that's the easiest way of doing it. Thankfully the magazine will be easier than that! :P When I have more info, I'll give it to you through this page. The classic line now - WATCH THIS SPOT!

  • Children's Writers and Illustrators Group Conference at Cambridge

Lookman The Author by Lookman The Author
I have just returned from a weekend at CWIGC and heard Phillip Pulman, Michael Rosen, Ann Fine, Malorie Blackman and William Nicholson speak among others. This was a very interesting weekend and helps keep me in touch with what is going on in the industry. It seems that the publishers are worried about losing their share of the market to other media companies. Their solution is too age range books. Delegates were not convinced by a connection between age and sales, even content age and sales, especially Phillip Pulman. Micheal Rosen the Children's Laureate spoke about the prescriptive use of Phonics in schools. This has led to the banning of Children's illustrated books in primary schools. He also complained about deskilling of teachers and the discouragement of children to ask questions where they may be wrong.

The Society of Authors are running the campaign in the media against age banding children's books, mainly on the belief that banding will discourage children or their adult book purchasers from buying a book. It was suggested that the banding of a book as 7+ would prevent children younger than seven reading a book because adults buy their books. Conversely, eight year olds will think a 7+ book as too babyish. The publishers believe it will increase sales by proving more information to hesitant or confused adult buyers. The only problem is the banding should be reading age, not chronological age. How many children would what to admit a negative rating and how many parents or grandparents know the reading age of each child? My brother thought it a matter of age discrimination, which is topical now.

The other major campaign run by the Society of Authors headed by Alan Gibbons, is to stop the British government from closing school libraries and sack librarians to save costs. Staff who object to closures have been threatened. In many schools, the librarian has been sacked and replaced by an unskilled person such as a dinner lady. The British politician's new great idea is prescriptive management of public services and hiding failure. Investigative journalism seems to have died in the UK. The Society itself has not really been effective in getting its views across.

  • The Literary Den Songwriting Competition

    Paul Carroll by Paul Carroll
This Competition is closed - no judging will commence. We apologise to the entrants

Rules: The entrant must be the creator of the piece. For bands, at least one member must have written the song.

If someone else has written the song, they must give express permission for the entrant to use the lyrics and music, before the entry has been made. This will be looked in to.

Lyrics and a link to the music must be given. Music must be made public for the competition, preferably in the form of a Youtube Video. Keywords on the video should include Literary Den as a means of securing the video’s position and authenticity in the competition.

    Prize:

The winning video will be hosted on Literary Mania and Literary Den Bebo pages, and all judges will subscribe to the user’s channel.

An Official Literary Den Dust Bunny will be awarded to each band member as a collective group, instruments included.

    Closing date November 7th

Judging Panel: Paul Carroll, Samantha Priestley, Andy Walker

You will note the panel is rather large. This is to ensure that there is no bias in the final result of the competition; where one judge may feel they are acting in favour of an entry more than they should, their vote will be discontinued.

All entrants will immediately be signed up for the Literary Den Newsletter upon submission. If you do not wish to avail of this service, send an email to that effect to literary_mania@yahoo.ie (the same email address entries should be sent to)

The Literary Den wishes to inform people that while the video is a must for entry, this is not the first thing that judges will look at. Rather, the panel will be looking at the lyrics first, and from there the videos to see how the lyrics are put to good use. The quality of the video will not be judged, but if entrants feel that they will not receive a fair judgement due to their recording equipment, the panel will accept the excuse – to put it simply, if you feel that having a 2.0 MP camera on your phone will not do you justice compared to an actual camcorder, simply say so when entering the lyrics and sending the link.

Entrants are required to be in the video themselves while playing, and may be required to submit a photograph of his/her-self. The winning act will be asked to supply a brief history of themselves for promotional purposes.

    About the Judges:

Each of the judges are writers in the Literary Den Book of New Fiction 2008, and have a wide point of view on the world of music. Mixed interests allow for the increasing number of teenage performers in particular, although not exclusively. Paul’s main interests lie in Soul and Rock, though in recent times he has come to enjoy many other genres of music, including his once least favourite – Rap. Andy has a large taste in many forms of Rock and Metal and is considered the group’s expert on the topic at present. Sam’s tastes cover Indie and Rock, with some of her favourite bands and artists using acoustic sounds, adding to the variety of music the panel listen to. The diversity amongst the judges is to give as many people as possible a chance in winning, based on their talent rather than their style.

Note that the judging panel is subject to change over time, and that all those judging are forbidden from entering the competition. Participation by any judge in an entry/act will result in the immediate disqualification of said judge from the panel and of the entry submitted.

  • Press release for The Forever Story

    ‘THE FOREVER STORY’

On the 30th of June, 2008 Nick Hornby wrote:

“For the first nineteen years of his life, Johnny Razor wasn’t Johnny Razor at all. He was Malcolm Weatherly, and he was born in Mile End Underground station on the night of 17th September 1940.”

These are the opening 35 words of The Forever Story.

A story that will be written, not by one author, but many. It’s an innovative online concept that will be launched 4th August and will encourage people to contribute to the world’s longest collectively-written story. The more people who join in, the longer the story will be, and the more money will be raised for children who find it hard to join in; children with Autism.

There are around 100,000 children with Autism in the UK, with around half a million family members directly affected by the condition. We want to raise awareness of the work Treehouse does to alleviate the often huge financial and emotional pressures associated with looking after a child with Autism and raise the much needed money so their work can continue.

For every single contribution to the story via our website www.theforeverstory.co.uk <http://www.theforeverstory.co.uk/>, TalkTalk will donate £1 to Treehouse. We want to reach TalkTalk’s donation target of £50,000 and to do that we’d like people to have the opportunity to write alongside some of the world’s most well-known and respected writers.

What we need from you? Just 35 or so words to continue our community-driven epic. The result of which will be more donations to Treehouse from TalkTalk.

We already have the support of Nick Hornby who opens our story and more writers are poised to contribute. We’d love you to be amongst them.

We’re gearing up now in preparation for the start of a story that everyone should be compelled to participate in. TalkTalk will be funding the development of www.theforeverstory.co.uk to encourage people to visit the website and submit their own words to the story.

How to contribute to The Forever Story:

If you would like to join The Forever Story please visit the website http://www.theforeverstory.co.uk

We’ve no doubt that The Forever Story has the power to get people writing (and talking). We very much hope you can help us and Treehouse by taking part in it.

Hey, I'm gonna post up my story again. I did so about...maybe 18 months ago. And I've had some time away to work on other projects outside of writing. But now I wanna get this story done.

It will be finished; I have an ending it just needs writing. But if anyone is bored; and has some free time; please read a chapter or two of the story. Anything at all; cause even just reading the first chapter and being told what you think about it will hlep me a great deal to get the ideas flowing and starting on editing.

I posted as the book, so just click the name Blood Binds or my picture.

Well, it's rare I promote my own stuff here, by here goes!

I've just finished a novel, with a few chapters on Bebo already. It was written entirely this month, without editting. It's 50,074 words long (the minimum for the competition, NaNoWriMo, is 50K)

I'd love a review if anyone's interested in seeing what one month can produce.

Ahh!! I never hought of trying that!

    Thank you!

To be honest, I've completely given up on Bebo publishing. I use fictionpress now, because they copyright your work for you and protect it if people, ahem, "borrow" it. I've had problems with that on Bebo before. Not so good when you're fully in love with the story you're writing...

If it's a brand new page without previous chapters, then yeah, some of us have been having trouble. You have to click on the 'Read' tab in the top bar and add new chapters through there.
If that's not the case, then I'm sorry, I'm stumped, Amy!

Det. Daniel Simons finds a body in the middle of a beach in Spain. DI James Lee of York CID finds another body in a fountain. Det. Christopher McFaden of Homocide in Orlando, Florida finds a third.
3 murders. 3 countries. 1 night. How can there possibly be a connection?
Det. Simons thinks there is. But the possibilities this brings are unthinkable. To solve this case, these 3 detectives will have to drop all their thoughts on human limitations and bond together to catch a killer that is like no other.

Everything you believe is about to be turned upside down.

This is an old idea that I'm redoing. The entire plot has been changed and the writing (hopefully) improved. I only have one chapter up at the moment but am working on more (promise). Reviews and critique will be helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks.
